Day 1
Chiang Mai to Pai
Your driver will pick you up from your hotel in Chiang Mai as you begin a scenic drive north to the charming town of Pai—a mountain valley destination known for its relaxed vibe, natural hot springs, and unique cultural blend.
Your first stop is at Mae Malai Market, a bustling local hub where villagers from the surrounding area gather to sell seasonal produce, handmade goods, and regional snacks. It’s a great place to sample exotic fruits and get a feel for everyday northern Thai life.
Continue to the Pong Duet Hot Springs, located within Huai Nam Dang National Park. These geothermal springs are some of the hottest in Thailand, with temperatures reaching up to 99°C at the geysers. Set in a serene forested valley, this lesser-known gem offers a peaceful, natural spa experience. You can relax in the shallow pools formed by mineral-rich streams that flow from the geysers.
After a local lunch, you’ll head onward to Pai, a small town beloved by travelers for its artsy charm, rolling hills, and welcoming mix of Thai and hill-tribe cultures. Despite its modest size, Pai is home to diverse ethnic communities including the Lisu, Shan, Karen, and Lahu peoples—each contributing to the region’s colorful traditions, languages, and festivals.
If time allows, visit one or more nearby ethnic villages such as Ban Bang Paek, where you can learn about the Lisu tribe, known for their vibrant traditional dress and highland settlements.
In the late afternoon, take in panoramic views at Pai Canyon, a striking natural landmark with narrow ridges and deep valleys carved by erosion. Often referred to as Thailand’s mini Grand Canyon, it’s a popular spot for a stunning sunset.
End your day with free time to explore the Pai Night Market, where local vendors sell handmade crafts, street food, and live music often fills the air—offering a perfect way to soak in the town’s laid-back atmosphere.
Day 2
Pai to Mae Hong Son, Caves of Tham Lod by Bamboo Raft (prehistoric coffins), Visit Wat Chong Kham, Wat Chong Klang and Wat Phra That Kong
After breakfast, begin your journey with a visit to the local morning market in Pai, where you can experience the everyday rhythm of village life and browse fresh produce, local delicacies, and handmade crafts.
Then, travel westward to Ban Tham Lod, home to the remarkable Tham Lod Cave system—one of the most impressive natural wonders in Northern Thailand. Accompanied by a local guide, you’ll explore the limestone caves by bamboo raft, floating along an underground river that winds for nearly 500 meters through stunning caverns. Inside, you’ll discover towering stalactites, ancient stalagmites, and mysterious prehistoric teakwood coffins, believed to be over 1,000 years old.
The cave complex includes three major chambers—Sao Hin, Tukta, and Pi Man—each with its own distinct formations and legends. The full exploration stretches over 1,600 meters, offering an unforgettable glimpse into nature’s artistry and the area’s long-hidden history.
Enjoy lunch along the route before continuing your drive to Mae Hong Son, a peaceful town nestled among misty mountains near the Myanmar border.
In the afternoon, explore three beautiful temples near Jong Kham Lake, the spiritual and scenic heart of Mae Hong Son:
-
Wat Chong Kham – Built in 1827 by the Shan people, this is the older of the two lakeside temples and houses a 5-meter tall seated Buddha in classic Burmese style.
-
Wat Chong Klang – Located just next door, this temple was constructed in the 1860s and features a striking Burmese-style chedi, easily visible from across the lake.
-
Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu – Perched on a hilltop overlooking the town, this is Mae Hong Son’s most iconic temple. Its two white chedis are classic Shan architecture, and the panoramic view at sunset—especially between November and February when the valleys are blanketed in morning mist—is simply unforgettable.
